Raspberry Green(or not) Smoothie

by Heidi @ Food Doodles on July 11, 2011

On the same topic as yesterday, I’ve been drinking so many smoothies lately it’s not even funny.  What is better for hot weather than something cold and sweet?  Really, I’d like to know 🙂  For this particular smoothie I made the spinach an option because a few times now we’ve just left it out for a more dessert-like option.  If your still a little nervous about trying a green smoothie, feel free to add a smaller handful of spinach to try it out.  You wont taste it at all!

What’s even better, is the kids go crazy for these smoothies.  Little do they know they’re not getting any added sugar and they are getting a couple servings and fruits and veggies for each of them 😀  Lately to increase the nutrition and the staying power of my smoothies I’ve been using these flax sprinkles from Flax USA that I won over at Kiss My Broccoli and I’ve really been enjoying them.  I don’t know if it’s just me, but when I grind my flax to use in smoothies I can never grind it fine enough so there are no little lumps in my smoothie so I’ve been leaving it out because I don’t particularly like that texture.  I could not even tell there was flax in these smoothies.  Awesome!  I’m so glad I got to try these, thank you, Heather!

So over the weekend I pushed myself to step out of my photography bubble a little and did quite a bit of experimenting with my camera and learned so much about it.  Funny how that works – I need to do it more often!  But the most important thing I learned is that I need to break out my tripod.  No way I can get bright enough photos without a tripod unless it’s a particularly bright day.  I tried to pick the least blurry pictures out of the bunch because I’ve already shot this smoothie once before and wasn’t happy with the pictures and now I’m out of raspberries!

Hope everyone had a good weekend!  Have a great week!

Love the color of that pink smoothie… Gorgeous! And nice pictures too 🙂 The experimenting with the camera paid off! Interesting that you added spinach to the smoothie… I would like to try that sometime! Thanks for sharing 🙂

This smoothie sounds great! I keep hearing wonderful things about tossing some leafy greens in a smoothie. Plus it looks so cool! 😀

These look yummy! I have a raspberry smoothie every morning…never thought of adding spinach. Your photos look great! I too am playing around with my photos – just got the book “From Plates to Pixels” – it’s full of helpful information!

Thank you! I’ve been waiting to buy that book but I just can’t wait any more! I need so much help with styling, I feel so lost sometimes. Thank you for the recommendation and for stopping by! 😀

I’ve been drinking a lot of green smoothies lately and I’ve wanted to add flax seeds but I know that I wouldn’t be able to get them small enough to not bother me! Those sprinkles look interesting, I will have to give them a shot!

smoothies are the most essential part of my diet! haha so true! I love them, and have at least (lol) one every day! I throw what ever I can into one 🙂

Haha, me too. I was going to make a joke about most of my diet being liquid but I realized I’m not that funny so I better keep it to myself. Some days I have to really think back to find anything that wasn’t a smoothie. What would we do without our blenders?!

Oh, I would be lost without my trusty tripod! I prefer to work without, of course, because you get so much more freedom of movement that way, but, like you said, unless it’s a beautiful, bright and sunny day, it’s quite hard to do without.

Spinach in smoothies, hey? I’ve never tried that and I have to admit that I am a little scared… I think I will have to give myself a good kick in the butt and go ahead and give it a try. I find I haven’t been eating enough spinach lately. I guess I could add that to my morning post work-out smoothie.

Tomorrow morning, perhaps? 😉

The more I learn I’m realizing that the tripod isn’t optional! I feel like I’m standing at the bottom of a mountain and that’s how much I have left to learn! It’s kind of an exciting feeling though 😀 I’m always inspired by your pictures, especially the styling! Everything looks perfectly put in it’s place, I love it. I really need to work on that.
I find I eat so much more spinach when I put it in my smoothies. I’m at the point where I don’t mind adding so much spinach that my smoothies even taste like it, but I know a lot of people would be grossed out by that so I don’t recommend adding too much at first 😀 Let me know what you think when you do try spinach in a smoothie!

Wow, thank you so much Heidi!!! It’s hard for me to believe that my pictures would inspire others… it’s usually the other way around! 😀 I too, have a million things to learn still! But I totally agree, it’s such a fun and exciting subject to learn!

I threw a handful of spinach in my morning shake. I usually always have a big container in my fridge, but I didn’t buy one this week because I had no use for spinach, so I actually had to pick some out of my spring mix… call that determination!

Quite frankly, I couldn’t taste them at all, and since my shake was made with fresh blueberries, well, it sort of looked like a blueberry mint shake. Next time, I will need to add more. Looks like I’ll have a good reason to buy a big container next week! 😉

I love the colors of your photos! How fun. We’ve been eating lots of smoothies at our house too. I’ve been combining frozen fruit with less milk and making a harder smoothie, sort of like ice cream. It’s so refreshing and satisfying!

I must admit that I’m a bit afraid of green smoothies. I drink all kinds of smoothies and veggie juices, but the greens scare me. You’ve made this look really appealing, though. Bookmarking it to try soon.

That’s my go-to smoothie right there, but I haven’t tried it with vanilla. I bet it’s good. My protein powder has all-natural vanilla flavor, so maybe I don’t need it. Great minds think alike! 🙂

Ah seems we’re both on raspberries at the moment.. 🙂 Love the look of that smoothie although… that greenish color..hmm, I prefer the bright pink..! lol
Great that you’re experimenting with your photography. I still do that as often as possible. Just today I was trying something new (picked the wrong subject though..) and I love it. It makes you think about things differently and yes, that tripod is a much needed accessory!

I’ve tried adding greens to smoothies, and it’s great! You really don’t taste them, and they add so much nutrition. The pink from the raspberries is so pretty. These smoothies sound fantastic!

Thanks Jennie! This makes one large serving. I also split it into 2 small servings for my kids, so it’s up to you 🙂
