This recipe has some history. Let me start out by saying my parents have always loved Indian food, and so this was a regular meal at my house growing up. Before I was even born(or maybe when I was very little) my parents had a Pakistani family living near them who generously shared the recipe and we’ve been eating and enjoying it ever since! I usually serve this with rice or potatoes, and it’s so good with some naan so I usually whip up this super easy 5 minute naan. Seriously delicious and you’re honestly only 5 minutes away from a few nice hot naan 🙂
I have made a few small changes to the original recipe, since I usually heap the spices I upped them in the recipe slightly, I use more tomatoes than the original recipe calls for since I like mine a little saucy to go with rice or potatoes, and I upped the peas as well because I usually just eyeball them and end up pouring way more than the original recipe called for. And that’s how I like it! Nowadays we use our deer meat but usually we would use lean ground beef. The original recipe also called for this to be topped with toasted coconut and sliced bananas, but I haven’t been brave enough to try that 🙂
Now in case you’re wondering, no this is not a super spicy curry. It’s spiced and flavorful but there’s no heat to it. It’s wonderful for anyone trying curry for the first time or for kids. My kids love this 🙂 Like I said we either serve it with rice or potatoes, and sometimes I’ll serve a veggie of some kind on the side. Or you could really go all out and make aloo gobi to go with this, which is a potato and cauliflower dish that is also amazing! I’ll save that for another post though 😉
I realize that there are a couple ingredients that may be difficult to find. Garam masala is actually a blend of aromatic spices that you can easily make yourself, simply use google to find a recipe if you can’t find it 🙂 Fennugreek is a bit more difficult and in my super small town I actually get it at our local health food store, so if your local grocery store doesn’t carry it, your local health food store most likely will! Even if it takes a bit of time to track down the ingredients, I hope you’ll give this a try! It’s one of my favorite dishes, it’s so easy and quick to make and I know you’ll love it!
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 large onion, diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 lb lean ground beef or venison
- 2 tablespoon mild curry powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon pepper
- ¾ teaspoon garam masala
- ¾ teaspoon cinnamon
- ¾ teaspoon ground ginger
- ¾ teaspoon tumeric
- ¾ teaspoon fennugreek
- 1 quart sized jar of diced tomatoes(or a 32 oz can)
- 2 cups frozen peas
- In a large skillet melt the butter over medium heat. When melted add onion and saute until translucent and softened.
- Add the garlic and stir for just a minute before adding the ground beef or venison. Break up and cook thoroughly.
- While the meat is cooking, add the spices. When the meat is fully cooked add the tomatoes and stir together.
- Bring to a boil and simmer for about 25 minutes. In the final few minutes of cooking add the peas so they can just thaw and cook before serving.
- Serve over rice or potatoes.
