National Can-It-Forward Day! (Giveaway Closed)

Happy Friday everyone!  I don’t have recipe for you today, just a quick mention about National-Can-It-Forward Day tomorrow, on July 14th!

Canning is something I do every summer and fall.  It’s something I used to be scared of, but I actually enjoy it now.  I look forward to it.  Of course it’s still a little scary, I worry about jars not sealing and large pots of boiling water scare me in the middle of summer since our AC is just an open window 🙂

I started out and continued with it only because it’s one of the most budget-friendly things I can do in the kitchen.  I can’t even imagine how much canning the produce from my garden(or large quantities of produce bought locally) saves us in groceries every year.  I’ll admit, I mostly can “boring” things.  I do a ton of just plain diced tomatoes, pickles and salsa.  I do peaches and applesauce and the occasional plain strawberry jam or apple jelly.  And that’s about it.  But I can’t say enough good about it.  Canning doesn’t have to be fancy.  You don’t need incredible recipes or even a ton of special equipment.  Just some jars and a stock pot and fresh produce.

I received a canning discovery kit free of charge(other than that I didn’t receive any compensation for this post or anything just so you know) and I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to try out canning without spending a lot on canning equipment.  It’s very simple, but if you’re just curious about it, that’s a great way to try it out.  Also if you’re interested in canning, be sure to check out the canning demos on the Ball Fresh Preserving website tomorrow.

Hi there…I’d love canning this time of the year when there are a lot of fruits to be canned. You’ll never know when you’d need a reliable chutney, jam or fruity sauce. The starter kit is so cool as gifts, I love it! Thanks for sharing…

I’ve been thoroughly scared of canning for AGES. If I got those jars, I’d finally get over my fears and teach myself to can!

I only recently started canning..and am totally hooked! It was scary at first but now I love it. I would use those jars to make a small batch of peach jam!

I just discovered several U-pick farms in my area, so I’d use those jars for berry jam 🙂

I’d can apricots and cherries. If I had leftovers, I’d save for the fall harvest and can tomatoes like crazy

I use jars to store all sorts of things in my kitchen so I’d use the extra jars for that. Who knows, I might try canning sometime too!

This is awesome! I love canning, but I am always running out of jars! lol I really want to make some pickles and can them for the winter!

Awesome! I love jams, I would probably try a few! Or I store things in my pantry with them- from flours to water! I also like to use jars to grow sprouts. Thanks!

I too can every Summer and Fall- strawberry jam, applesauce, different salsas, tomato sauce and diced tomatoes – i am hoping to try out green beans too this year!

I would definitely put those canning jars to good use 🙂
