Aren’t these the greatest?  I love them!  And I think it’s the perfect time to share them with you! 🙂  I made these with the Whole Wheat Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe here on Food Doodles but I’ve also rewritten it below with the instructions for making the spiders so you don’t have to go clicking all over.  These cookies really are wonderful, but you can make these creepy spiders with your favorite chocolate chip cookie recipe, just read below to see how it’s done!

It’s quite easy to do, and I think you’ll agree, it looks great!  I was so excited to take pictures of these I didn’t even wait for the chocolate to harden which is why it’s still shiny.  Once the chocolate does cool and harden it’s not so shiny 🙂  You can even choose which style of spider you like best.  In the picture above you can see I experimented with spiders that have two legs going up and two going down, and spiders with just 4 legs on each side.  I preferred the latter, but whatever you want!

Before baking you simply need to place 1-3 chocolate chips depending on your size of cookie and how many spiders you’d like on each cookie, flat side up.  Then after baking take a small plastic bag with a small amount of chocolate chips pushed down into one corner and microwave for a few seconds till the chocolate is melted.  Cut a tiny hole in the corner of the bag and squeeze out chocolate make legs on your chocolate chips cookies.  After piping the chocolate on I even go back with a toothpick to swirl it together so the body and legs look connected 🙂

Prep Time

Total Time
45 mins
Course: Dessert
Servings: 2 dozen
  • 1 cup salted butter softened
  • brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 4 cups white whole wheat flour
  • 3 teaspoons cornstarch
  • teaspoons baking soda
  • ½ teaspoons fine sea salt or table salt
  • cups semi sweet chocolate chips divided, plus an extra 2-3 tbsp for melting
  1. In a mixing bowl beat the butter until soft and fluffy. Add the sugar and beat until completely creamed together.
  2. Add the eggs, one at a time and beat till completely combined. Add the vanilla and beat into the mixture.
  3. In a separate bowl stir together the flour, cornstarch, baking soda and salt.
  4. Add the dry ingredients to the butter and sugar mixture and mix just until combined, adding just 1 1/4 C of the chocolate chips in the last minute. Once the dough is done, cover and refrigerate at least 1 hour, overnight is better. This gives the flour a chance to absorb some moisture so they will bake more evenly and a chance for the butter to harden up a little which will make the cookies thicker when baked.
  5. When ready to bake, preheat the oven to 350°F. Prepare 2 baking sheets with a non stick liner or with parchment paper.
  6. Drop large spoonfuls(about 2-3 tablespoons) per cookie 2" apart. Stick 1-3 chocolate chips, flat side up on the top of the cookie dough, only pressing lightly into the cookies. Place in the oven and bake for 8-12 minutes, depending on the size of your spoonfuls of dough.
  7. Bake just until the cookie looks set, and maybe a little golden around the edges, do not wait for it to be golden on top or they will be over baked and not as soft.
  8. Remove from the oven and let cool while prepping the chocolate for the legs of the spiders. Place 2-3 tbsp of chocolate chips in a small ziploc style bag and microwave just a few seconds until melted. Cut a very small hole in the corner of the bag and squeeze the chocolate through, onto the cookie to make the legs. Once the legs are piped on take a toothpick and swirl the chocolate from the legs and the chocolate chip together to make the body. Let cool completely before storing in an airtight container.
