Keema - Indian Spiced Ground Meat with Peas

Spiced lean, ground meat, with tomatoes and peas, known as keema served over a bed of rice or potatoes.  This is a quick and easy(and not too spicy!) dish the whole family will love.

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 large onion diced
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 lb lean ground beef or venison
  • 2 tablespoon mild curry powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 3/4 teaspoon garam masala
  • 3/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 3/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 3/4 teaspoon tumeric
  • 3/4 teaspoon fennugreek
  • 1 quart sized jar of diced tomatoes or a 32 oz can
  • 2 cups frozen peas


  1. In a large skillet melt the butter over medium heat. When melted add onion and saute until translucent and softened.
  2. Add the garlic and stir for just a minute before adding the ground beef or venison. Break up and cook thoroughly.
  3. While the meat is cooking, add the spices. When the meat is fully cooked add the tomatoes and stir together.
  4. Bring to a boil and simmer for about 25 minutes. In the final few minutes of cooking add the peas so they can just thaw and cook before serving.
  5. Serve over rice or potatoes.
