Whole Wheat Chocolate Cherry Waffles

by Heidi @ Food Doodles on February 9, 2012

I don’t think chocolate waffles need any kind of introduction.  Although, I do have to say I think I’m developing a thing for chocolate for breakfast.  And I don’t mean cold cereal that turns your milk brown.  I don’t mind my kids following my chocolate for breakfast habit when these are on the menu.  They’re whole grain, packed full of fruit(especially if you pile it on top too) and get most of their sweetness from the cherries in them.  They’re just barely sweet, and since I can’t really see dumping syrup all over these, I prefer just a light dusting of powdered sugar.  And some cherries cooked with a little cornstarch and a small spoon of honey to pile on top.

You know what’s awesome about waffles?  You can keep them in a bag on the counter for a couple days, or you can even freeze them and then throw them in the toaster for a quick breakfast or snack.  What’s not to love?

One thing I have to mention, I’m not sure if it’s my waffle maker – which is pretty old – but I seem to have to cook these for an extra minute longer than the waffle maker says, so just keep that in mind.  Although I’m pretty sure it’s the ancient waffle maker I use 😀

OOh OOH OOH! My hubby doesn’t like it when I use the word divine to describe food but that’s the first word that came to mind when I saw the first photo! Wowwee! These look AMAZING! And I don’t even like cherries that much!!

Not that the waffles don’t look great, but I would like to put that cherry topping on a million things right now!

Love it, absolutely love it and going to try it myself. Chocolate and cherry are great combination but you have such a great idea using waffles! I’m in love with this recipe and can’t wait to have it myself. =)

The one piece of kitchen equipment I’m lacking is a waffle iron. And I think it’s a good thing because if I had one I’d be making waffles all the time. Really. All the time. Because of recipes like this! Chocolate whole wheat waffles?!

I’m not a cherry fan but that sauce looks so good. I could definitely eat that sauce.

Chocolate + cherry makes me weak in the knees…probably the best combination there is. Cherries are one of the few fruits that I would actually consider eating as is for dessert…they’re that good. I’ve gotta make these 🙂

This post makes me really sad that I had to throw out my waffle maker a few months ago–I need to replace it! I am most definitely not a morning person, but I would totally wake up for Chocolate Cherry Waffles. They look so good!

Amazing! Awesome recipe. Wow those look good! I thought for sure that they would be off limits to me, but no! I look at the list of ingredients and they are right up my alley. Super healthy, yet super decadent looking. My kind of breakfast!!!

And I happen to have a bunch of frozen cherries on hand… like 5 pounds or so. I think this would be a great way to use up some of them.

Definitely going on my must try list.

And geez, your photos are simply incredible! Keep it up, girlfriend. You’re making my mouth water, big time!

Off to pin some of those gorgeous pics…
