Chocolate Peanut Butter Filled Whole Wheat Cream Puffs

by Heidi @ Food Doodles on April 16, 2012

Cream puffs are something that will always, always remind me of my grandmother.  There are just a few baked goodies that instantly remind me of her including shortbread(made into little thumbprint cookies with a piece of maraschino cherry on top), an incredible chocolate cake that was made with zucchini(and yes I knew about it! :D), perfectly frosted cupcakes with jam or jelly thinly spread around the sides and then rolled in coconut and cream puffs.

Not just any cream puffs though, they were always incredible.  Tall and filled with perfectly whipped cream and to make them special she always hid a small dollop of some kind of pudding in the bottom of each puff.  So in the spirit of that, even though my cream puffs will probably never be as tall or as perfect, I filled these with a small dollop of a chocolate peanut butter “pudding” underneath the sweet whipped cream.  Of course you could just fill them with cream though, if that’s how you like them.

These cream puffs are actually for a surprise virtual baby shower for the lovely Caroline of Chocolate and Carrots!!  Be sure to check out what all the other bloggers involved have made for the party with the links below.  And thank you so much to Erin of Texanerin Baking for organizing such a fun virtual party!  Of course, a big congratulations to Caroline and her husband – we’re all so excited for you!

Heidi!!! Thank you so much for this amazing surprise! I can’t believe you did all of this for me when I know you are expecting too! 😀 I was so surprised this morning and I can’t seem to stop crying out of pure happiness. I’m pretty sure that a couple of these cream puffs would calm me down, though. They look spectacularly light and fluffy! I’ve never had a whole wheat one before and I’m LOVING the surprise chocolate at the bottom. I bet they just melt in your mouth.

Thank you so much again for your thoughtfulness. I hope everything goes SUPER smoothly for the birth of your 3rd! 😀 So exciting! Our little ones can be virtual buddies! 😀

What’s gluten flour? Can I sub vital wheat gluten? We don’t buy regular flour, so I am trying to figure out what to use. I’m thinking of filling them with home made cream cheese.

I’ve always loved cream puffs but thought that they needed something chocolaty or just some other flavor to contrast the light “creamy” taste. PB definitely would do that trick! these are awesome :)

Haha, aww at Caroline’s comment about your little ones being virtual buddies. That kind of melts my heart. I really think that your choice is so clever! Chocolate + peanut butter + whole wheat. Good going. :)

They look wonderful! I don’t think I’ve had a cream puff before, but if I ever make them, I’ll definitely use this recipe. And chocolate peanut butter filling. Yummy!

I hope everything goes very smoothly and the baby just magically pops out with no effort. That would be nice, wouldn’t it? :)

The virtual baby shower is such a nice idea! And the cream puffs look spectacular – I don’t believe I’ve ever had one made from whole wheat flour, but of course that’s much healthier. And anything with peanut butter has my full attention! Good post – thanks.

What a retard am I? I didn’t even notice that you actually got the recipe from my blog :-) Thanks. I see that you pocked each puff after you were done baking them. I don’t do that and mine seem to work fine. If I encounter any problems in the future with deflated puffs now I know what to do :-)
