This mocha milkshake is a real treat, loaded with coffee flavor, and it’s super easy with only five basic ingredients. If you like a little boost in your day, you’ll love this indulgent coffee milkshake. You can make it traditionally or paleo, vegan and dairy-free.
It’s another record-breaking hot day, so here’s a cold drink to cool down with.
It couldn’t be any easier to make, and you don’t need any fancy ingredients.
Tips and tricks:
- Use full-fat ice cream to get full creaminess and flavor. I’ve also used this Paleo Vegan Ice Cream with great results! Then your milkshake is also paleo, vegan and dairy-free, as long as you use a compliant milk.
- You don’t want it to be watered down, so add just enough milk to blend it smoothly.
- You can serve it in a frosted glass for an extra cold treat. Just rinse the glass and add it to the freezer for about 10-20 minutes before serving.
Garnish ideas:
Chocolate-covered espresso beans are my favorite, but shaved chocolate also looks great.
Toasted coconut, whipped cream, or a dusting of cocoa powder are also tasty options.
If you want, stir in some chocolate sauce, swirl in some caramel sauce, or go all out and add some salted maple caramel sauce.
Looking for a boozy Friday treat to finish the work week? Add a little Kahlua or Irish cream and then the milk until it’s the right consistency.
Do I have to use full-fat milk?
No, it’s not mandatory. But I always prefer whole milk over lower-fat options. You can use any milk you’d like.
Do I have to use brewed coffee?
No, but it’s great to put leftover coffee in the fridge to use for this milkshake when you need a special treat.
You can use an espresso shot, instant coffee granules (which are also great to have so you can make this Coffee Cheesecake!), or instant coffee powder to get the coffee flavor.
Do I have to use coffee-flavored ice cream?
If you have vanilla in the freezer, you can definitely use it. You can get the coffee flavor by adding the brewed coffee or a double shot of espresso if you need a double boost.
Can I make this mocha milkshake in advance?
It’s best to make this milkshake and serve immediately. It doesn’t take a lot of time, so it’s easy enough to make on the spot.
How to freeze a milkshake
If you have to freeze it, put it in the back of the freezer away from the door and fluctuating temperatures. Store the shake in a freezer-safe airtight container, which can be kept in the freezer for up to 2 months.
Make sure there isn’t a lot of air in the container or it will form ice crystals which will affect its texture and taste. To thaw, run the container under hot water and drink up.
Can I make a healthy version?
All you’d have to do is use a healthy ice cream recipe. The one I mentioned above is great!
Do I use hot brewed coffee?
If you start with hot brewed coffee in the morning, pour a cup and let it cool to room temperature, then put it in the fridge for when you return in the afternoon to make this milkshake.
If you’re rushing to make this now, brew the coffee, let it sit a bit, pour it in a container with a lid, and put it in the freezer for 20 minutes.
Can I use decaffeinated coffee?
Sure, if caffeine is something you want to avoid, decaffeinated coffee will work fine to flavor this mocha milkshake.
But if caffeine is something you don’t do, you might want to use a different flavor of ice cream as well, as most coffee ice cream does have caffeine in it. Then use decaffeinated coffee to flavor.

If you’re looking for more drinks to cool down and relax, try one of these.

I’m going to brew some cold press coffee tonight just so I can have another of these milkshakes tomorrow. I don’t have any dietary restrictions but I know people who do so I appreciate you including them in this post.
